The Asteroid is the first car radio that runs on Google's open source OS, this concerns the somewhat older Android version 1.5. In the Dutch version, the Asteroid, has a single din format and features a 3.2 "TFT display, access to four internetservices: iCoyote the application, which displays traffic information, an app that points the driver to cheap gas stations, Orange Live Radio to play streaming radio station, and finally a card application.
The card application is not complete navigation solution, as revealed by a demonstration in Amsterdam. The app makes it indeed possible to plan routes on Google Maps, but the route can only be shown on the display, voice navigation is not available.
The Asteroid connects to the Internet through 3G networks. This can be done with a dongle or mobile phone by using bluetooth or usb to the radio link. Furthermore, the Asteroid has a handfree set with bluetooth connection, and music tracks can be selected with voice recognition function.
The ability of the Asteroid is 4x55W. To counter theft, is a removable frontplate available. The radio is not only compatible with iPhones and Android mobile platform it can also be approached to USB sticks and SD cards.
Users can not add new applications to the Asteroid, but the manufacturer promises new apps in the future.
