In Engeland gaan er jaarlijks 1,2 miljoen mobiele telefoons kapot door waterschade zoals vallen in het toilet, een bierglas of komen ze schoon uit de wasmachine. Als het aan P2i legt komt hier snel een einde aan.
Mobiele telefoons kunnen met een coating beschermd worden tegen vocht, regen of als ze in het water vallen. De coating is ontwikkeld in opdracht van het Engelse Ministerie van het Defence Science and Technology Laboratory. Een spin-off hiervan, P2i, is in gesprek met drie belangrijke mobiele telefoon producenten om de coating met naam Ion-Mask te gaan gebruiken.
“Mobile phones and MP3 players are too small to be fitted with seals to make them waterproof, so water inevitably can creep in,” Aldus Ian Robins, directeur ontwikkeling bij P2i. “By making the surface repel water, we have been able to take devices that fail the normal… shower tests, and make them pass. Obviously, how waterproof a device is depends on design, but we can ensure that water doesn’t seep through joins or small gaps. Some electronics companies want the individual components to be treated too, so they have a much greater level of protection.”
